Service Description

Play therapists and other professionals working with children and adolescents are constantly challenged with adequately applying neuroscientific knowledge in their practice. One of the primary foundations of Gestalt therapy with children and adolescents is Gestalt Psychology and studies of complex organisms. Consequently, Gestalt Play Therapy contains many aspects of contemporary neuroscience. Understanding when, why, and how some parts of the brain are activated with our interventions requires in-depth knowledge of the mechanisms of the neurological system. In this webinar, the participants will gain an understanding of the historical foundations and current neurobiological core principles of Gestalt Play Therapy. They will be able to return to their clinical work with knowledge of the central nervous system and how the Gestalt approach to embodied approaches in therapy can help their young clients become integrated with minds that are coherent. Learning Objectives: Attendees will be able to: 1. Summarize at least five fundamental principles of Gestalt Psychology and complexity theory that contributed to the development of the Gestalt approach to child development and play therapy. 2. Explain ways in which neurobiology, as represented by neuroscientists, confirms the Gestalt Approach to play therapy with children and adolescents. 3. Recognize three similarities between contemporary neurobiology and the fundamental theoretical principles of the Gestalt Approach to play therapy with children and adolescents. 4. Demonstrate knowledge of brain anatomy and how methods and modalities used in Gestalt Play Therapy activate the central nervous system towards integration. 5. Describe the perspective of “bottom-up” with regard to the embodied approach of Gestalt Play Therapy. 6. Demonstrate ways that the above knowledge can be appropriately applied in Gestalt Play Therapy by making selections of various therapeutic interventions.
